Discovery Place

Last week the kids and I went back to The Scientific Center to check out Discovery Place.
It was even cooler than expected, and we ended up being there 4+ hours!

When we arrived, the guy at the Ticket Counter said we were just 30 minutes short of 1/2 price admission time...no problem, we'll just get some Pinkberry to kill time =).

Our son spent some time checking out this tiny wooden model of the entire property of The Scientific Center...

And once we were at 1/2 price time, we bought our tickets and headed in. First on the list was this super cool light/sound movement thingy. (I'm pretty sure that is the technical name for it...) Basically it was this hallway area that made music and spread color lights in strobe whenever it detected movement.
AKA: Kindergarten Rave
The kids LOVED it and danced their little hearts out.

Next up was by far their very favorite activity of the day: Laser dodge!
This was a dark room filled with dry ice like smoke (ie, not irritating to the eyes/throat) that also had green lasers throughout. The object was to crawl from one end of the room to the other without bumping into a laser and triggering the alarm.

Hard to get a good picture in such a dark space, but here you can see our daughter on one side - having completed the course - and our son on his belly crawling under a low laser beam...

The IMAX area. We didn't buy tickets on this day, but will check out in the future. Our sun just wanted a picture near it because he insisted it looked like something from Star Wars =)...

Learning about light and water reflections...

This room allowed you to capture your shadow on the wall for about 30 seconds...

SO COOL.

Learning more about color matching and reflections...

Learning about different lights and views through different lenses...

Also inside was a giant sandbox...

The twins played and played in this...

And then we learned about lasers and trapping light inside of these shapes...

The twins made friends with these two sweet Arabic-speaking girls towards the end of our time there. They all played together so well, despite speaking completely different languages. It made my heart so happy to watch them all have fun and do their best to communicate and take turns, especially as our son said "khallas!" naturally when he wanted to explain that he was done with something.
Having neighbor kids who speak Arabic and English is cool...it's been so fun to see all the kids pick up words and phrases from each other! Our kids are at such a fantastic age to absorb another language, and it thrills me to hear them speak some Arabic words easily.

This was also the day I met the lovely South African woman who invited me to join the local Home School Co-op. We've yet to be able to meet up with the group (Kuwait has had some bad weather lately, and then we all had the stomach bug), but are looking forward to a group meet up later this week. I've joined their group's Facebook page, and already it's been such a blessing to "meet" these wonderful women...especially when I was on the cusp of feeling so serious isolation. God is good.

After all our hours of play time, we grabbed some Pizza Hut for a quick dinner, and then headed outside to hail a cab home.
